Sustainability and ethics in AI: impulses from Bonn
Artificial intelligence (AI) can be an important tool for sustainable development, but the sustainability of AI itself is often neglected. The associated costs – carbon emissions, mining of rare minerals and electronic waste – are just some of the environmentally damaging aspects of AI infrastructure. Prof. Dr. Aimee van Wynsberghe founded the Bonn Sustainable AI Lab in November 2021 to analyze this problem in detail and develop measures to combat it.
This research initiative brings together scientists from a wide range of disciplines to explore the ethical challenges of AI and enable a better understanding and informed assessment of its sustainability, from implementation to use.“
