Call to all AI laboratories to immediately suspend the training of AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months.
The open letter, which calls for a moratorium on AI development, is an urgent appeal to all research institutions and companies to temporarily stop work on advanced AI systems.
The main motivation behind the letter is concern about the ethical, safety and social implications of AI surpassing human intelligence. It is argued that we need a pause to thoroughly assess the potential risks and establish guidelines for safe development and implementation. The letter calls for a time-out of at least six months for systems that are more powerful than existing models such as GPT-4.
During this period, multidisciplinary teams of ethicists, scientists and regulatory authorities will work together. The idea is to incorporate a broad spectrum of perspectives in order to find comprehensive and well thought-out solutions.
